As an art conservator, Jeremy Casson’s role is to prevent artworks from degrading due to damage, ageing or environmental changes, with the goal being to keep them as close as possible to their current state for as long as is viable. While art restoration focuses on mending flaws or bringing an artwork back to its original form following damage, conservation work is all about preserving the work’s existing state, delaying any inevitable aging and protecting it from damage.

An art conservator’s role is often varied but typically takes in tasks such as researching how an artwork was made, discovering what could be causing environmental degradation and creating a plan to prevent this from happening further. Undertaking specialised conservation practices and techniques is at the heart of the job. Art conservators also often work with a wider restoration and conservation team to identify the best conditions for the handling, storage and display of the artwork.

When he’s not working, Jeremy enjoys painting watercolours, sketching buildings and pottery. He is also a fan of horseracing and tries to attend at least one major horse racing event with his family every year. Jeremy loves to travel and experience new locations and cultures. He particularly relishes spending time in museums and art galleries and has visited many institutions of this nature around the world, including the Louvre, the Getty and Rijksmuseum. As a foodie, whenever he visits a new destination Jeremy takes the opportunity to try the local cuisine – while at home he and his family regularly visit local restaurants, as supporting their community is important to them.
